Evolution and the Buying of a Home

Beth and I bought a home last year

this is what we've learned after moving in

- it was built in the early two thousands

- it has had at least seven changes of ownership

- it has been renovated on several occasions

- it is a clear improvement on earlier forms

- it has been influenced by other designs

but none of this matters

we didn't know this when we bought it

nor do we particularly care about it now

when Ellie showed us the placed last year

we saw that it suited our needs perfectly

was exactly what we'd been looking for

saw it as a gift of our gracious God

and bought it on the spot

so why, when I learn of an animal

or visit a geological wonder

each of which is lovely, in and of themselves

why do so many feel the absurd need

to tell me of its imaginary antecedents

as if this beast's or things imagined history

had any bearing on my joy in it today

knowing it as a gift of our gracious God
