My Recent Education in Genesis

I never realized this before last Sunday

that one cannot really grasp thirty four

unless one’s looked back

at a man’s failure in thirty three, its end

in light of the dream of thirty one thirteen

unless one’s looked further back

at the promise made by God in twenty eight

the promise made by man in twenty eight

unless one’s also looked forward

to the beginning of thirty five

where His mercy overwhelms our shame

only then can one learn again of

God’s unfailing promise

man’s unending failure

God’s unfathomable grace
